Adult & Continuing Education Courses: Winter/Spring 2009

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Classes are held at Spackenkill High School (SHS), Todd Middle School (TMS), Hagan and Nassau Elementary School (HES). If a location is not listed with the class you register for, you will be notified of the location by mail.
  • Continuing education classes will not be held on Mon., January 19, Mon., February 16 and Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs., April 6, 7, 8, 9 and Mon., April 13. 2009.
  • Classes will not be held when school is canceled due to inclement weather.
  • High School students can enroll in classes.
  • Spackenkill School District senior citizen residents (62 & older) may register for classes at no charge provided there is a vacancy. Senior Citizens, who are not Spackenkill residents, may register for a class at the resident rate. Not applicable to Driver Education/Safety Classes.
  • Confirmations will not be sent. You will only be notified if the class is canceled or filled.
  • Receipts will be given out at the first class.
  • No refunds will be made unless class is canceled.
  • Material / book expenses are student’s responsibility.

A class is canceled when there is insufficient enrollment (usually less than 8 students). If you are planning on registering for a class, please send in your registration at least a week before the start of the class OR if you intend to register for the class and your registration will not reach us a week before the class begins, please call 463-7800 to late register by phone.

ARTS & CRAFT

QUILTING
Learn the steps necessary to make a quilt, pillow, or wall hanging. For beginners or those experienced in needlework. Limit 13 students.

HEALTH & EXERCISE

WOMEN'S BASIC STRENGTH TRAINING
Build stronger muscles, bones and jointgs, improve cardiovascular performance and achieve overall fitness at any age. Using free weights & your own body weight, this class will focus on building strength, balance, and flexibility. Bring towel or mat folr floor work and 3-5 lb. weights.

GENTLE YOGA
Breathe, relax, feel, watch, and allow ... Kripalu Yoga is meditation in motion. Gently stretch & strengthen body, mind & spirit. The perfect yoga class for beginning students, those with back care issues, fibromyalgia, or those looking to reduce stress. Please bring yoga mat, pillow, and blanket.

GYROKINESIS®
Gyrokinesis® exercises allow one to work on the entire body through seven natural elements of spinal movement and joint articulation. It’s fluidity of movement is reminiscent of and offers many of the same benefits of yoga, dance, gymnastic, swimming and tai chi. Participants tend to move with greater flexibility and ease and be more relaxed in their daily lives. This approach systematically and gently works the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating movements as the breathing patterns stimulates the nervous system, opens up the energy pathways, and oxygenates the blood.

YOGA “Fore” GOLFERS/ WEEKEND WARRIORS
Spring training for golf and other sports can be more enjoyable (and less stressful) with a class designed to focus on back-care, core strength, shoulders, flexibility, and maybe even your golf scores! This class will provide you with a short daily routine and a quick, effective 5 minute warm-up to practice before you tee off or participate in other sports.

COMPUTER CLASSES

BASIC MICROSOFT WORD
Learn Microsoft’s word processing program basics. This class will start with the fundamentals of word processing. Topics include keyboarding techniques, page setup, saving/printing. More advanced topics will be included as time permits.

USING THE MICROSOFT WORD DRAW TOOLBAR
Add graphics / pictures to Word documents. Learn how to use the “Draw” toolbar; add, format and manipulate text boxes, clip art, and to use WordArt. Previous Word experience helpful.

MICROSOFT WORD TIPS
Learn timesaving techniques that will make you more efficient and productive when using Word. Learn when to use keyboard shortcuts instead of the mouse or menus. If you plan to upgrade to Office 2007, take this class to learn shortcuts that will help you in the transition.

BASIC POWERPOINT
Learn the basics of creating PowerPoint presentations. The class will work with adding and navigating slides, and slide layouts as well as printing handouts and presenting a slide show. More advanced topics will be included as time permits.

BASIC MICROSOFT EXCEL
Learn the basics of using this spreadsheet program. Take advantage of Excel’s layout to organize lists of information. Navigating, building and editing Excel files, using columns and rows, and performing simple calculations will be covered.

DRIVER SAFETY

NEW YORK STATE 5 HOUR PRELICENSING
This five hour class is for beginner drivers with a valid learners permit and for other drivers who need to obtain a NYS Drivers License. Bring Learners Permit to class. Fee: $20.
