Hagan Principal's Message

November 2009

Dear Families,

What a wonderful start to a new school year! From Curriculum Night to the Bicycle Rodeo, the enthusiasm of our families to participate and volunteer is what makes Hagan so special.

The Town of Poughkeepsie Fire Department provided valuable lessons on fire safety prevention. The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department instructed our Kindergarteners on Halloween safety. Our students were enthusiastic about learning these valuable life long lessons.

Students in grades 2-5 are eager to be part of the Hagan Book Clubs where their love of reading is enhanced. Our PTA Book Fair will take place in December. During this holiday time providing children with the gift of books can further support the value and pleasure derived from reading.

In October a new program was introduced, "The Recess Rodeo", where a full day of cooperative learning activities; including Peaceful Playground, Character Education, and Conflict Resolution Workshops were experienced by all. The day ended with a Halloween costume parade. This new endeavor was a success, due to the support and help of all the Hagan Staff and a retired teacher, Mrs. Gwen Higgins.

Please take advantage of the Hagan Website where upcoming activities and events are posted. This is a wonderful tool our district has set up to keep parents informed.

It’s great evidencing our staff’s dedication to student learning and character building. They are look forwarding to meeting with parents on our scheduled parent/teacher conference days, November 13th, 19th and 20th, to discuss your child/children’s progress. Be aware these are ½ days as a result of conferences.

Our fifth grade students are preparing for the New York State Social Studies test which will be administered November 16th and 17th. These are standardized assessments based on material your child has learned throughout previous years. Please encourage them to do their best!

Thank you for your continual participation and support.

May the bounty of the season fill your heart and home. Happy Thanksgiving!
