We are third grade students working with Mrs. Vitek in the Resource Room program at the Nassau School. We really enjoyed learning about butterflies and helping to make this website. This project has really helped us to improve our reading, writing, and math skills. Keep reading to learn more about where we live and go to school. Nassau School is part of the Spackenkill District in Poughkeepsie, NY. There are 397 students in our school. There are more than 25 teachers in our school. There are 4 schools. There are 2 elementary schools, 1 middle school and 1 high school. They built this school where there once was a farm.

Poughkeepsie is part of Dutchess County. During the American Revolution Poughkeepsie served as the capital of New York. Poughkeepsie is also a center of industry. One big company in Poughkeepsie is IBM. In 1788 a meeting was held in Poughkeepsie to decide if New York would accept the United States Constitution. In all of Dutchess County the most people live in Poughkeepsie.

Dutchess County is in the heart of the Hudson Valley, midway between New York City and New York State's capital. The largest employers include IBM, Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation, Vassar Brothers Hospital, Vassar College, Saint Francis Hospital, Marist College, the state of New York, and Texaco. The population in Dutchess County was 263,758 in 1997. The major attractions include the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic site, Library and Museum, the Eleanor Roosevelt National Historic site, and the Vanderbilt Mansion. The land area in Dutchess County is 801.660 square miles. New York is the home of the New York Yankees and the New York Mets!!

New York was the eleventh state to enter the union. The nickname for New York is the Empire State. New York was one of the original thirteen colonies. Henry Hudson was an English explorer who claimed New York for the Netherlands in 1609. New York is also called the Excelsior State. Excelsior means ever upward. Ever upward is the state motto. New York is a wonderful place to visit.
