Host Plants

Nectar Plants

To plant a butterfly garden there are some important things to remember. In your garden you should include host plants and nectar plants. The garden should be planted in full sun. You shouldn't use pesticides in your garden. Butterflies help your garden by pollinating the flowers.

Caterpillars can usually be found on leaves. They eat larval food plants that are also called host plants. They all don't eat the same type of leaf. Frass is the solid waste of caterpillars. When they get too big for their skin they molt.

Butterflies are attracted to flowers. They eat nectar from flowers. Nectar is a sweet liquid. The butterfly drinks the nectar through a proboscis that looks like a long tube. They like white, purple, and yellow flowers.

Caterpillars and butterflies need food to survive. Caterpillars usually eat leaves of green plants. The butterflies usually eat nectar from flowers. Butterflies find their food by scent and the color of the flowers. When they go from flower to flower they pollinate the flowers.
