Grades 1 - 8 in September 2008


REGISTRATIONS FOR SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM CLASSES WILL BE ACCEPTED
AT ANY TIME DURING THE PROGRAM AS LONG AS THERE IS AN OPENING IN THE CLASS.

THE DEADLINE FOR CLASS REFUNDS ON ANY DROPPED CLASS IS THURSDAY, JULY 3.
THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS AFTER THIS DATE.

Program Information

  • Classes are open to all Spackenkill District students in grades 1 - 8.
  • Classes will be held on a weekly basis at Todd Middle School unless otherwise noted. The program will be in session from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon, Monday through Friday.
  • Class dates are as follows: July 7 - 11, July 14 - 18, July 21 - 25, and July 28 - August 1, 2008
  • Children may register for as many weeks as they choose.
  • Please review the course offerings listed in the Program Catalog requires Adobe Acrobat Reader or on this webpage. Children will be registered on a grade level basis according to the grade they will enter in the Fall 2008.
  • A short break will be incorporated into the morning. Children should bring a snack and beverage which does not require refrigeration.
  • Fee: $60 per course
  • Registration Deadline: Wednesday, May 14, 2008
  • Please use the registration form on the inside back cover of the Program Catalog requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Registration(s) should be placed in an envelope along with payment [make checks payable to Spackenkill School District]. The envelope should be addressed to the attention of Summer Enrichment Program and returned to the main office at your child’s school. Please use separate forms for each child.

SCHEDULE OF CLASSES

WEEK 1: JULY 7 - 11

# 1 SUPERMARKET SCIENCE / Dina Giangrasso & Daniele Wilcox / GRADES 1-2

Do you enjoy hands-on experiences? Don’t mind getting messy? Then prepare to experience some supermarket science and lots of fun! This class uses everyday materials for its creations. Students will make a variety of play doughs, goop and bubble solutions to name a few. Science, math, large/small motor skills, and creativity will all be used. Students will be able to bring home some of their creations. PLEASE WEAR OLD CLOTHES OR BRING A PROTECTIVE SMOCK.

# 2 - SPORTS & GAMES / Gr. 1-2 / Ms. Hinsch

This class will combine both physical activity with developing social skills.The children will develop valuable social skills while participating in a variety of age appropriate physical activities.

# 3 SPANISH FOR KIDS / GRADES 1-2 / Adrian Vazquez

This is an introductory Spanish class that will introduce students to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures around the world. The use of games, language and music will be integrated into the class with the students actively participating. The class is also designed to prepare students for future foreign language studies they will take later in their academic careers.

# 4 DISNEY ADVENTURES / GRADES 1-3 / Laura Antonelli / Jonathan Megna

Come join a Disney adventure! Take a magic carpet ride with Jasmine, swim with Ariel, look for honey with Winnie the Pooh and much more! Arts and crafts galore!

# 5 CRAZY MASKS & GOOFY GLASSES / GRADES 2-4 / Irene Barbuto

Design & decorate a collection of crazy masks and goofy glasses. Have fun disguising yourself by taking on a whole new identity.

# 6 PHYS ED FUN / GRADES 3-5 / Richard Meyer

Come learn and try different games like Monster Ball, Striker, Centipede Tag, The Last Samurai. Have fun scooting around on the Roller Races. More activities include Asteroids, Shark Attack, Wall-to-wall Chicken, Cyclops Tag and beginning Lacrosse skills.

# 7 CERAMICS FOR KIDS / GRADES 4-8 / Michele Antonelli / Marianne Callan

Do you like playing with clay and sculpting things! Imagine all the fantastic objects you can make from a lump of clay. In this class you will create your own portrait head, lanterns, roman vases and much more. Roll up your sleeves and get ready to get messy.

# 8 CREATIVE WRITING / GRADES 5-7 / Kelly McCabe

Students will discover how much fun creative writing is and the different styles of creative writing including short stories, poetry, and play writing. Students will be able to make their writing come alive through storytelling and acting out some of their writing.

# 9 FUN WITH DUCT TAPE / GRADES 5-7 / Christine Bosjancic / Dawn Nedin

You won’t believe all the things you can create with duct tape - and with a wide variety of colors - bookcovers, wallets, shoes, backpacks, and much more! Join the fun and be creative at the same time.

#10 BEADS, BAUBLES & BANGLES / GRADES 6-8 / Pat Jones

Design and create your own custom jewelry. Learn the art of paper beading. A variety of beads and other materials will be used to fashion your designs. Students will make friendship bracelets, necklaces, pins, earrings and jewelry boxes to hold all of their treasures.

WEEK 2: JULY 14 - 18

Explore the world of a princess! Spend the week making “princess” objects using your “royal” imagination and creativity.

# 13 TROPICAL LUAU / GRADES 1-3 / Christine Bostjancic

Learn how to deal with the heat while having fun! The children will listen to Hawaiian music, make fans, tropical drinks, palm trees, and hula skirts as well as play games, learn the limbo and the Hula. Parents are invited to join in the fun at the end of the week for a Hawaiian experience.

# 14 KIDS IN THE KITCHEN / GRADES 2-4 / Judy Calhoon / Kathy Markowski /Judianne Middlebrook

Children will prepare recipes inspired by favorite children’s books. Through hands-on cooking experience, children will practice math, reading and writing skills, and will also develop good work habits as they follow directions in a sequential order.

# 15 GIFTS FOR EVERYONE! / GRADES 2-4 / Irene Barbuto

Be ready for any occasion by making gifts for family, friends and even yourself. Have fun designing gifts such as tote-bags, wallets, purses, magnets, color scratch bookmarks and more!

# 16 SPANISH FOR KIDS GRADES 3-5 Adrian Vazquez

This class that will introduce students to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures around the world. Dance the morning away! Learn dances from the 70’s to now. You’ll learn dances like the Hustle, the Electric Slide, country line steps and much more. It’s a great way to exercise and have fun.

# 19 CREATIVE WRITING / GRADES 5-7 / Kelly McCabe

Students will discover how much fun writing can be by exploring the different styles of creative writing including short stories, poetry, and play writing. Students will be able to make their writing come alive through storytelling and acting out some of their writing.

# 20 LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! / GRADES 5-8 / Laura Antonelli / Jonathan Megna

Do you enjoy acting, building and designing sets, creating costumes, sound and more? Then this class is for you. Whether you’re in charge of audio, makeup, or you’re acting or backstage, every part is important. Be a director, producer, and actor.

# 21 SPORTS SAMPLER / GRADES 5-8 / John Aagaard & Ron Nobles

Keep your athletic/sport skills tuned up during the summer. This class will help your improve your game - whatever it might be. Included are basketball, baseball/softball, soccer, Capture the Flag, Star Wars, European handball and much more!

# 22 LET’S GET CREATIVE USING MIXED MEDIA / GRADES 6-8 / Lynn Lombardi

This class will give students the opportunity to really use their artistic instincts by exploring different techniques for creating art - drawing, watercolor, pastels, charcoal and collage, and using combinations of mixed media to produce different art projects. Other elements will be added for texture and dimension, such as string, sand, tissue, sticks, etc.

WEEK 3: JULY 21 - 25

# 23 UNDER THE BIG TOP / GRADES 1-2 / Irene Morris

Boys and girls - come join the circus! Learn about circus animals, clowns and other circus performers. Enjoy creating circus-themed crafts and making snacks under the big top.

# 24 SPORTS AND GAMES / GRADES 1-2 / Melissa Hinsch

This class will help students develop valuable social skills while participating in a variety of age appropriate physical activities.

# 25 SPANISH FOR KIDS / GRADES 1-2 / Adrian Vazquez

This class that will introduce students to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures around the world. # 26 AMERICAN GIRL FUN / GRADES 2-5 / Pat Gaudette

Children will explore the world of the American Girl doll as well as each doll’s time period and even celebrate with a tea party. There will be lots of American Girl craft projects as well. Make sure your American Girl doll comes along - or any special doll you have.

# 27 BECOMING “HANNAH MONTANA” / GRADES 3-5 / Laura Antonelli / Jonathan Megna

If you like to sing, dance, and dress up, then this is the class for you! It’s your turn to perform as “the Hannah Montana”. You will learn songs, wear costumes and perform your own show!

# 28 SCRAPBOOKING & MORE! / GRADES 3-5 / Amanda Mortensen

Capture the moment! Bring in memorable photos and create a wonderful memory book by bringing your photos alive with embellishments and captions.

# 29 - PHYS ED FUN / Gr. 3-5 / Mr. Meyer

Discover new techniques for beading, candy making, needlework, scrapbooking and more! Children will use their creativity as they design their unique keepsakes.

# 31 ROCKET SCIENCE / GRADES 4-6 / Ron Nobles

Have fun learning the science of rocket making. You’ll create your own special rocket, learn what makes it soar into the sky, and then see it take off! Student will be supplied with all the materials they need to become “rocket scientists”.

Game seekers - you are in the right place. Learn to play a variety of board games, card games, team building games. Different activities every day. Come enjoy a week of games and FUN!

# 39 FUN WITH PAPER / GRADES 5-7 / Dawn Nedin

The class will explore different types of paper and how they are used (watercolor paper, textured paper, etc.) The class will also make their own paper and create lots of projects with paper such as mobils, paper folding, stamping & card making. The class will also learn about the history of paper.

# 40 SPORTS SAMPLER / GRADES 5-6 / John Aagaard & Ron Nobles

Enjoy a week of photography and discover how to tell a story with your pictures. Learn how to really use your digital camera. The class will cover taking portraits, scenery, and action shots. Trick photography will also be covered. (Students need a digital camera for this class).
