REGISTRATIONS FOR SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM CLASSES WILL BE ACCEPTED
AT ANY TIME DURING THE PROGRAM AS LONG AS THERE IS AN OPENING IN THE CLASS. 

 

THE DEADLINE FOR CLASS REFUNDS ON ANY DROPPED CLASS IS THURSDAY, JULY 2, 2009.
THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS AFTER THIS DATE.

Program Information

  • Classes are open to all Spackenkill District students in grades 1 - 8.
  • Classes will be held on a weekly basis at Todd Middle School unless otherwise noted. The program will be in session from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon, Monday through Friday.
  • Class dates are as follows: July 7 - 11, July 14 - 18, July 21 - 25, and July 28 - August 1, 2008
  • Children may register for as many weeks as they choose.
  • Please review the course offerings listed in the Program Catalog or on this webpage. Children will be registered on a grade level basis according to the grade they will enter in the Fall 2008.requires Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • A short break will be incorporated into the morning. Children should bring a snack and beverage which does not require refrigeration.
  • Fee: $60 per course
  • Registration Deadline: Wednesday, May 14, 2008

  • Registration(s) should be placed in an envelope along with payment [make checks payable to Spackenkill School District]. The envelope should be addressed to the attention of Summer Enrichment Program and returned to the main office at your child’s school. Please use separate forms for each child.

 CLASS LISTINGS

 

# 1   SUPERMARKET SCIENCE  / GRADES 1-2 / Dina Giangrasso / Kelly Malet - THIS CLASS IS FILLED

 Do you enjoy hands-on experiences? Don’t mind getting messy? Then prepare to experience some supermarket science and lots of fun!  This class uses everyday materials for its creations. Students will make a variety of play doughs, goop and bubble solutions to name a few. Science, math, large/small motor skills, and creativity will all be used. Students will be able to bring home some of their creations.  PLEASE WEAR OLD CLOTHES OR BRING A PROTECTIVE SMOCK.

# 2  SIGN LANGUAGE / GRADES 1-4 / Theresa Miller - THIS CLASS IS CANCELLED
This class will teach basic spelling with letters, names, colors, animal names and more. The children will also learn a variety of children’s songs and to sign common everyday phrases.

# 3   BASIC SPANISH FOR KIDS / GRADES 1-5 / Adrian Vazquez - THIS CLASS IS CANCELLED

This is an introductory Spanish class that will introduce students to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures around the world. The use of games, language and music will be integrated into the class with the students actively participating. The class is also designed to prepare students for future foreign language studies they will take later in their academic careers.

 # 4   BASIC FRENCH FOR KIDS / GRADES 1-5 / Jenna Murray - THIS CLASS IS CANCELLED

This is an introductory French class that will introduce students to the French language and culture. The use of games, language and music will be integrated into the class with the students actively participating. The class is also designed to prepare students for future foreign language studies they will take later in their academic careers.

 # 5   TREASURE ISLAND  / GRADES 2-4 / Christine Bostjancic

 Be part of a scavenger hunt to find a tropical island. The children will make a treasure map and discover a tropical island and its treasures - but beware - there could be pirates on the island! There children will participate in a variety of fun projects as part of the search for Treasure Island!

# 6   PHYS ED FUN  / GRADES 2-3 / Dean Engle

 Learn new games, sharpen your game skills and just have a lot of fun. Lots of activities to enjoy including soccer, baseball, kickball, basketball and more!

# 7   WRITE & ILLUSTRATE YOUR OWN PICTURE BOOK / GRADES 3-5 / Cecilia Durkin
THIS CLASS IS CANCELLED
 Learn what it takes to make a good picture book. Learn how to write a well-crafted story and what pictures make for good illustration. By the end of the class you will have a finished picture book.

 # 8  SPORTS SAMPLER / GRADES 4-6 / John Aagaard

 Keep your athletic/sport skills tuned up during the summer. This class will help you improve your game - whatever it might be. Included are basketball, baseball/softball, soccer, Capture the Flag, Star Wars, European handball and much more!

 # 9  CERAMICS FOR KIDS  / GRADES 4-8 / Michele Antonelli / Marianne Callan

Do you like working with clay and sculpting things! Imagine all the fantastic objects you can make from a lump of clay. In this class you will create your own animal mask, teapot, sea life sculpture and much more! Roll up your sleeves and get ready to get messy.

# 10  CSI: POUGHKEEPSIE / GRADES 6-8 / Elyse Joy
THIS CLASS IS FILLED
 Students will use a variety of introductory crime scene techniques to solve a mock crime. Students will learn how to analyze fingerprints, blood spatter, footprints, DNA evidence, handwriting, and hair and fiber. Using scientific tools, participants will learn how to properly collect evidence and measure a crime scene. A mock trial will be held at the end of the week.

  

Week 2 / July 13 - 17

 # 11   SEASONAL HOLIDAY ARTS & CRAFTS / GRADES 1-3 / Theresa Miller

 Enjoy a week of creative arts and crafts fun. The children will create a variety of crafts that coincide with different seasons and holidays. PLEASE WEAR OLD CLOTHES OR BRING A  PROTECTIVE  SMOCK.

 # 12   ZOO ESCAPE / GRADES 1-3 / Irene Morris

 Discover what happens at the zoo! Learn about many types of wild animals, their natural habitats and how they live in captivity. Find out what it’s like to be a zoo keeper. Have fun creating crafts and participating in sensory activities using all 5 senses. It’s all happening at the zoo!

 # 13   GAMES, GAMES, & MORE GAMES / GRADES 1-3 / Dawn Nedin

Game seekers - you are in the right place. Learn to play a variety of age-appropriate board games, card games, team building games. Different activities will be offered every day. Come enjoy a week of games and FUN!

 # 14   KIDS IN THE KITCHEN / GRADES 2-4 / J. Calhoon / K. Markowski /J. Middlebrook

 Children will prepare recipes inspired by favorite children’s books. Through hands-on cooking experience, children will practice math, reading and writing skills, and will also develop good work habits as they follow directions in a sequential order.

 # 15   AMERICAN GIRL FUN / GRADES 2-4 / Pat Gaudette

Children will explore the world of the American Girl doll as well as each doll’s time period and even celebrate with a tea party. There will be lots of American Girl craft projects as well. Make sure your American Girl doll comes along - or any special doll you have.

 This class will build on what the student have been introduced to in the basic class. Students will learn more vocabulary and phrases as well as dig deeper into Hispanic culture including art, music, and cuisine.

Dance the morning away! Learn dances from the 70’s to the present. You’ll learn a variety of dances including the Disco, the Cha Cha, country line steps, the Mambo  and much more. It’s a great way to exercise and have fun!

Let’s recycle those water bottles, soda cans, magazines and newspapers, milk cartons, jugs, aluminum cans, and even those plastic grocery bags. We’ll turn them into beautiful crafts and works of art. It’s an easy and fun way to recycle your garbage.

# 23   DRAMA WORKSHOP / GRADES 5-8 / Christine Fitzpatrick

Join the production of “Hairum Scarum.” The class will cover movement, voice exercises, theater games, improvising and learning lines. Props, costumes, and scenery will all be covered with the whole class involved in the process of putting on a play.

This class will help students develop valuable social skills while participating in a variety of age appropriate physical activities.

Make, decorate, & learn to play your own instruments. Explore wind, string, and percussion sound and then make your instrument using recycled or unconventional materials. Enjoy a  week of musical mayhem!

Keep your athletic/sport skills tuned up during the summer. This class will help you improve your game - whatever it might be. Included are basketball, baseball/softball, soccer, Capture the Flag, Star Wars, European handball and much more!

 # 30  CHOCOLATE LOVERS CLASS / GRADES 4-6 / Heidi Espinoza

Students will explore the world of chocolate by learning about the history of chocolate, the chocolate-making process and the big names in chocolate. There will be taste tests, graphing, baking and game playing, all with chocolate as the focus.

 # 31 SUMMER CRAFT SAMPLER /  GRADES 5-8 / Judy Calhoon & Kathy Markowski

 Discover new techniques for scrapbooking, beading, candy making, needlework, etc. Students will use their creativity as they design their own unique keepsakes. Please bring in photos for scrapbooking.

Learn what it takes to make a magazine from every aspect of publishing. Each student will have the opportunity to be a journalist, designer, photographer and illustrator to create a magazine. If you have a digital camera please bring it.

The class will explore different types of paper and how they are used (watercolor paper, textured paper, etc.). Create lots of projects with paper such as mobils, paper folding, stamping & card making. The class will also learn about the history of paper.

 This class will focus on basic, gentle yoga moves designed for beginning students. The children will also learn meditation techniques as well as how to keep a journal. Both meditation and journaling can help foster creativity, self-esteem, and learning skills.
