Dear Parents and Community Members,
The 2008-2009 proposed school budget was adopted by the Board of Education at a meeting held on April 7th. The proposed budget of $34,691,567 represents an increase of 5.9% above the 2007-2008 budget, with a tax levy increase of 4.41%.
This budget maintains all current educational programs, while adding two faculty members, purchasing new textbooks, and providing for mini-capital projects district-wide. Specifically, we are proposing the addition of a .5 ESL teacher, and a .8 science teacher. Textbooks would be purchased for the new secondary math courses that must be offered, as well as for middle school social studies and K-8 science. $100,000 is included in the budget for small capital projects, such as refinishing gymnasiums, updating the Middle School lockers, and improving the temperature control systems at the High School.
It is important to note that the Board of Education also made a commitment at the April 7th meeting to hold just one vote. If the budget fails in May, the District will go to a contingency budget for the upcoming school year, primarily because the proposed budget is just $50,896 more than the contingent budget. Please do not let this deter you from voting, however. If the budget fails and we go to contingency, the law does not permit us to purchase some much needed equipment and furniture. A contingent budget will have a negative impact on students.
Voters will also be asked to elect two Board members this year. Ralph Chiumento’s seat is open as is the the remaining four-year term of Trish Luchnick’s position, currently filled by Tina Carano.
Residents are invited to attend a public hearing on the budget on May 12th, at 7:30 at Todd Middle School.
The annual meeting, budget vote, and trustee election will be held on Tuesday, May 20th, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Spackenkill High School. Please remember to vote!
Sincerely,
Lois Colletta
