Eighth grade students that are taking Spanish have the opportunity to travel to New York City to view and participate in the Spanish culture. Information including costs is sent home during the school year. The group visits such places as The Hispanic Society, the UN, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, South Street Seaport, a Flamenco Dance Studio, Medieval Times, the Museo del Barrio, the Spanish Court, a spanish restaurant for dinner, a theatre [Repertorio Espanol], and the Cloisters. The trip is three days and two nights during the first week of May. It is great to experience the Spanish culture so close to home.
The eighth grade French students have the opportunity to experience and participate in the French language and culture of Canada. Information including costs is sent home during the school year. During this four-day immersion, the students visit historical sites such as le Chateau Frontenac, Battlefields Park, the Citadel, and participate in cultural activities like a Cabane a Sucre [maple sugar farm], a dance cruise on the St. Laurence River, and eat in French restaurants. This trip is the perfect way to incorporate learning through first hand experience.
For over 35 years our sixth graders have been traveling to Washington D.C. Because of National events and springtime school responsibilities, we have changed the trip from being a springtime sixth grade trip to a fall seventh grade trip. The faculty and students look forward to experiencing all of the historic and cultural sites of Washington D.C. The cost of the trip is subsidized with financial assistance from the Spackenkill PTA and our Board of Education. The trip is three days long from Wednesday to Friday, and culminates with a wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.
