What's Right with Spackenkill!

Dear Spackenkill Community,
Why is community building a pillar of the District Strategic Plan? Great schools do not work in isolation from their communities. The community becomes a working partner with the school in promoting, enhancing, and supporting quality education. For example, there will be a Cabaret Night for the community tonight, and the scary Zombiefest for families of all ages on Saturday.
In this issue of the newsletter, we feature a gifted children’s performer, Red Grammer; a visit from the Arlington Fire District firefighters to Nassau, teaching fire safety; athletic playoffs that involve families and the community; participation of NHS in the Interfaith Crop Hunger Walk; PTA support for the book fairs; and our town SRO providing safety education. A great school embraces its community and a great community embraces its school! Spackenkill is part of both.
My best,
Mark Villanti, Ed.D.

Red Grammer Sings from the Heart
|
Singer/songwriter/entertainer Red Grammer paid a visit to Nassau Elementary this past Tuesday. He led the students through songs that send a positive message about being kind to others. Themes of caring, excellence, oneness, and diversity are interwoven through his music. Mr Grammer talked about how true happiness lies in filling the “buckets” of others through word and deeds of kindness and consideration. One of the highlights was when Prinicipal Nancy Ferrarone, Superintendent Mark Villanti, and all of the teachers present, as well as acting custodian Charlie Christolon, joined Mr. Grammer in a song that they acted out. The students gave the adults a huge round of applause.

Firefighters Visit Nassau
|
|
Nassau students learned all about fire awareness this past Thursday when the Arlington Fire District paid a visit with a fire truck and a fire safety house. The students took a tour of all the gear on a state-of-the-art fire truck and learned how firefighters dress to battle a blaze. They practiced stop, drop, and roll on a mat and did a great job evacuating the fire safety house. One of the photos above shows Mrs. Strapec's class preparing to watch a video on fire safety. We appreciate the visit!

NHS Walks for a Cause
|
|
National Honor Society members participated in the Dutchess Interfaith Crop Hunger Walk in Poughkeepsie on October 14th. CROP Hunger Walks help to provide food and water, as well as resources that empower people to meet their own needs. From seeds and tools to wells and water systems, the key is people working together to identify their own development priorities, their strengths and their needs. |
