Dear Spackenkill Community,

On Tuesday evening, I attended a forum at Dutchess County BOCES focusing on potential future graduation requirements in New York State. The forum addressed the findings of the New York State Education Department’s Blue Ribbon Commission. The recommendations include adopting the New York State Portrait of a Graduate as the framework for diploma requirements. The portrait has seven elements that define the graduate: Critical Thinker, Innovative Problem Solver, Literate Across Content Areas, Cultural Competence, Social-Emotional Competence, Effective Communicator, and Global Citizen. It’s interesting to note that these qualities are already a hallmark of Spackenkill graduates. Educators gave feedback on the recommendations, and we will keep you informed as this process continues. A timeline for implementation is expected to be released in November. For more information, please see NYSED’s Blue Ribbon Commission page.
