Dear Spackenkill Community,

One of the activities highlighted in the newsletter that makes so much sense is after-school yoga. Why, you may ask? With the proliferation of technology, students are less physically active than ever.  Programs like after-school yoga help students not only physically, but also emotionally. Teenage stress in our culture appears to be increasing. While there are many causes, physical inactivity and the obsession with social media are big factors.

Congratulations, Todd Middle School students, on your success with the Science Olympiad competition! Congrats to the music department as well for your success in being recognized again by the NAMM Foundation. Finally, congrats to everyone in the district and especially Michele Moloney, who chairs our District Safety Committee, for being named again by Utica National Insurance Group with highest safety award, Titanium with Honors!

My best,

Mark Villanti

Music Brings Nassau Together

music in our schools
At a Music in Our Schools assembly at Nassau Elementary School this week, teacher Kody Andreas led students and staff in a concert of African, folk, and contemporary songs. The students enjoyed moving with the music and using their own voices as instruments. Every grade sang a special song, and the teachers, along with Principal Ferrarone, also played the drums. The students especially enjoyed a video that Mr. Andreas put together highlighting moments in music throughout the school year.

Something's Brewing at Hagan

There's a new service at Hagan: the classes of Ashley Murin and Rachel Darling are serving coffee to staff members on Fridays. Staff members fill out order slips during the week, and the beverages of their choice are delivered to their doors.  The students do it all: making the coffee, processing the orders, and calculating change. It is now in week two and is a big success! Students even wrote thank you notes to their customers.

Spackenkill Rowing Club (aka Crew) held an Erg-a-thon to raise money this past weekend.  Visit their website, www.spackenkillrowingclub.org, to check out their calendar of upcoming events and see them in action on the river!

Meet Me In the Library

The Todd library is the place to be after school. On Tuesdays, students come for yoga class, taught by Elyse Joy, while Wednesdays offer role-playing tabletop games.  Library Media Specialist Ms. Cunningham ensures that all goes smoothly.

state assessments
Every spring, the Grades 3-8 English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics Tests are administered to students across New York State. These annual ELA and math tests for students in grades 3-8 are required by the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015. The tests are designed to measure how well students are mastering the learning standards that guide classroom instruction and help to ensure that students are on track to graduate from high school with the critical thinking, problem solving, and reasoning skills needed for success in college and the modern workplace. The tests also show how schools and districts are progressing with the learning standards and can support professional development for teachers. Click here for the Parent Toolkit for the 2019 tests.
